Southern Dallas Roundup: 8/30/11

August 30, 2011

In the news…

Mike Rawlings sits down with Channel 8′ Brett Shipp to talk about ethics at City Hall.  But the focus of the interview (surprise, surprise) is Willis Johnson.  The mayor didn’t throw Mr. Johnson under the bus in this interview, but I’m listening for the horn which could blow anytime.

The great heatwave of 2011 is about to be over.  No records, but it’s a summer we won’t forget anytime soon.

Unfair Park posts an affidavit from Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson where she logs multiple complaints with the redrawn map of U.S. House District 30.  Congresswoman Johnson notes that Oaklawn, Uptown, Balch Springs, Downtown and the Medical District are all drawn out of the proposed map.  I’m interviewing Congresswoman Johnson today and will ask her to elaborate.

Yesterday I had a chance to interview Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Baileys Circus Ringmaster Johnathan Lee Iverson.  Iverson and the crew were at the Oak Cliff Boys and Girls Club for a preview show.  You can read the full interview here, and I plan to post a story on the B&G Club performance at some point.  Thanks to Marcos Quintana who was our photographer for the day.  These are good times.

Barbara Mallory Caraway visits Suite 609, “Exploring A Run” for U.S. Congress

July 15, 2011

by Shawn

State Representative Barbara Mallory Caraway visited the newsroom here at Suite 609 this morning.  We had a wide ranging discussion, but we spent much of our time talking about redistricting.

The most interesting thing that came out of our conversation was Rep. Caraway telling she is “exploring a run” for U.S. House District 30, which was news to me.  She said that she will keep us posted on her exploration in the weeks to come.

I had never formerly met Mrs. Caraway prior to this morning and I’m sure a more extensive Dallas South News post will happen somewhere down the line.

The doors of Suite 609 are always open.   Well, you know from about 8:30 to 5:30.  Except on holidays, and….well, you get the point.

Anyway, we’re here for anyone who wants to make an appointment and Sylvia Rhodes-Bradley stopped by for a chat this morning.  Back in May, Bradley announced her intentions to run for the Dallas County Commissioners Court’s District 3 seat.  That election doesn’t take place until November of 2012.

We had a lengthy discussion along with her campaign manager Nancy Lloyd.  Bradley, who is running as an independent, said she represents a younger group of Dallas leaders whose time has come.  “We can’t just sit on the sideline and wait,” Bradley said.

Check in with on Monday for the full interview.

Hanging with BWB Presenters Akilah Richards of and Takeyah Young of

I had the opportunity to travel to Los Angeles this weekend to emcee the 2011 Blogging While Brown Conference.  While there, I was interviewed by’s Zondra Hughes.  Hughes article (Hyperlocal Blogging is the Rage; So, Why Aren’t Black Bloggers Cashing In?) focused on my conference presentation “Bootstrapping your way to hyperlocal success.”

Also on Sunday, an associated press story (LA teen reporters boost community with newspaper) cited Dallas South News in news outlets across the country.  Christiana Hoag’s story featured the Boyle Heights Beat and referenced DSN as a nonprofit model news organization.

And also on Sunday I delivered a Rant on Inside Texas Politics on WFAA Channel 8.  This time the topic was government inaction that has taken hold nation wide.  Enjoy your week!

Recapping the week that was @dallassouthnews

Some great info up on Dallas South News this week after the holiday weekend.

Michael Hubbard asks who will fill the void in Southern Dallas leadership.

Abraham Sanchez makes is 1st DSN contribution with a review of the Mana concert at American Airlines Center with photos by his sister Jovana Sanchez Melendez.

State Senator Royce West recapped the 82nd legislative session in a opinion piece.

D.A. Craig Watkins says he’ll seek a private law firm to collect on bond monies owed to the County.

And Gary Reeves of WFAA 8 reported on a prayer rally held for Commissioner John Wiley Price and I was interviewed as part of the piece.

Not bad coming back from a long layover.  Next week will get even awesomer.
